Hermann Mahle, aged 26, joined Hellmuth Hirth on 1 December 1920 as the seventh employee. At that time, the workshop was called “Versuchsbau Hellmuth Hirth”. December 1, 1920 is considered the anniversary of today`s MAHLE Group. It soon became clear that the workshop would not survive by performing engine tests alone. This created the need to build a cost-effective production line to finance ongoing engine testing. At that time, in automobile production, pistons were usually made of cast iron. Versuchsbau Hellmuth Hirth decided to build light alloy pistons for combustion engines. In 1927, the company developed the world`s first regulated expansion piston in Germany and in 1931 the world`s first aluminium annular piston for diesel engines. As a result, piston technology has been constantly improved. In 1938, the company was transformed into MAHLE KG and the new company logo was introduced. The company grew and before 2. World War II was the only company in Germany that manufactured die-cast products made of magnesium alloys. During the war, the Bad Cannstatt company produced lightweight metal pistons ranging from small cars to 40 cm bore pistons for underwater engines (such as the 522-litre MAN M9V 40/46 diesel engine).

The Fellbach plant accounted for 70% of German die-casting production made of magnesium, aluminium and zinc alloys. [9] In 1964, founders Hermann and Ernst Mahle decided to give up private ownership of their companies and integrate the companies into a charitable foundation. They renounced most of their personal assets and transferred the shares to the MAHLE Foundation. In 1931, the aircraft engine manufacturing was split into an independent company, Hirth-Moroten GmbH. On 1 November 1922, Hermann Mahle`s brother, Ernst Mahle, joined the factory as head of design.[7] In 1924, the company merged with Chemische Fabrik Griesheim-Elektron, the inventors of the magnesium alloy Elektron,[5] and was renamed Elektronmetall GmbH. [6] MAHLE GmbH is a German auto parts manufacturer based in Stuttgart. It is one of the largest automotive suppliers in the world. [2] As a manufacturer of components and systems for the combustion engine and its peripherals, the company is one of the world`s top three suppliers of systems for engine systems, filtration, electrical, mechatronics and thermal management. [3] In 2018, Mahle GmbH had sales of more than €12.5 billion. [1] From 2021, the 71,000 employees will work at 160+ production sites and 12 major research and development centers in Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil, Japan, China, India, Poland, Spain and Slovenia.

More than 6,000 engineers and development technicians worldwide work as partners for MAHLE customers on new products and systems. In 1920, engineer and pilot Hellmuth Hirth and others founded a small workshop in Cannstatt, where he developed and built a two-stroke engine.[1] [4] After 1945, new products were developed and manufactured (e.g. aluminum cylinders with Cromal (chrome) surface coatings in 1951). Mahle`s Board of Directors consists of the following members:[11] MAHLE cooperates with Formula E champion DS Techeetah Mahle Dichtungen, the first choice for original sealing solutions. From 2020, MAHLE GmbH will consist of five business units and four profit centers. Today, MAHLE is a leading supplier of piston systems, cylinder components, valve train systems, air management systems and fluid management systems for all renowned automotive manufacturers. In 2010, the MAHLE Group generated sales of more than €5.2 billion.

In 2017, the MAHLE Group generated sales of more than €12.8 billion. In 1976, MAHLE brought the first European low-pressure aluminium engine blocks to series maturity. In 1988, the composite camshaft was developed as standard, and in 2001 MAHLE presented a cooling concept for the pistons of diesel engines of high-speed passenger cars. The world`s first all-plastic oil filter followed in 2003. In the same year, MAHLE developed and designed its first complete engine, which was used in Formula Student. From the 2020/21 season, MAHLE will be the technical partner of DS TECHEETAH, the leading team in Formula E. MAHLE will use its many years of expertise in electric mobility to support the racing team while leveraging the rigors of the motorsport environment to gain a wealth of new knowledge that can be transferred to series development. As a driver of sustainable mobility, MAHLE has developed a variety of core technologies in electromobility, including developments in battery cooling.

In the final of the sixth season of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, currently taking place in Berlin, DS TECHEETAH drivers will compete to defend the team title in vehicles that already bear the MAHLE logo.
