Prostitution itself is not illegal in our country, but advertising and public prostitution are illegal. Owning a brothel is also illegal, but as places like GB Road and Kamathura prove, these laws are rarely enforced. Brothels and red-light districts have been part of major European cities such as Amsterdam and Hamburg for decades and sometimes centuries. But the current era of prostitution began around the year 2000, when the Netherlands became one of the first major European countries to formalize the legality of prostitution and regulate it like any other industry.
