On the April 15 episode of Saturday Night Live, regulars Kate McKinnon, Vanessa Bayer and Aidy Bryant led the cast in a sketch that included a performance of Legally Blonde the Musical in college that went horribly wrong. Watch a clip below. During the episode, hosted by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, there were several musical sketches, including “Crucible Cast Party,” that captured the embarrassment and ridicule of high school productions and their after-parties. A new skit from this week`s episode mocked the film`s extremely negative approach to Marilyn Monroe`s life. Chloe Fineman plays the iconic star (technically, she plays Ana de Armas as the iconic star) and wears the iconic pink dress from “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” She is nervous about shooting a big scene, so two studio employees (Brendan Gleeson and Heidi Gardner) are brought in to cheer her up by reading her fan mail. But in the “blonde” fashion, it quickly turns into a session of reprimand. “Marilyn, you`re a whore,” Gardner`s first letter reads. “A blond tramp. No one will ever love you, disgusting tramp. From then on, things only got worse as the letters became increasingly corrosive and misogynistic, reflecting what many perceive as the film`s attitude toward Marilyn Monroe. The Tony winner plays Reverend Avery, an added role for the on-screen version of the Broadway musical. And in her review of the film on IndieWire, Sophie Monks Kaufman wrote, “It`s not that Andrew Dominik made an implausible movie about the experience of a poor young beauty haunted by the fear of madness and chewed by the Hollywood machine, the problem is that he made a film inspired by Marilyn Monroe. in which it is monotonous characterized as a victim. To see one of his films is to revel in a luminous performer whose intelligence is sublimated under a knowingly hypnotic physical affect. His legacy is always best preserved by his talents, rather than by a film that might as well be another face printed by Andy Warhol`s factory – an X-rayed version so that instead of bright pop art colors, the stencil simply comes from a skull. Some believe it was a parody of this clip from a youth theatre production of the show at Red Room Studio in Vancouver. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy are back as Sanderson sisters! The writers of “SNL” are far from the first to notice the excessive cruelty of the film.
In IndieWire`s recent triple take of the film, Kate Erbland wrote, “Dominik`s film is not only horrible because the world was cruel to Marilyn; His cruelty goes further. It`s not just about sending that pain back to the audience, it`s about doubling it on de Armas` avatar Marilyn. That`s all it takes: it hurts, then you`re going to hurt too. The film, which will be streamed in October, also stars Minnie Driver as a nurse.
