Personal Hygiene : Ten (10) Ways To Get Rid Of Dark Underarms

Getting rid of dark underarms is one of the challenges we face as women, even as men. Having dark underarms greatly affects the psychology of a person especially when it comes to dressing and confidence. Most women tend to stay off sleeveless tops, shirts and dresses because of the color of their underarm which may be a source of embarrassment especially when they have to lift something, wave at someone or even when they have to wear swimsuits to take a much needed swim 🙁 . So, while I was doing an online research recently, I stumbled on this topic and decided to share how to get rid of this common thing that we struggle with.

Okay, before we start to tackle the problem, let’s find out what the causes are;

Some of the main causes of dark underarms are ;

  • shaving,
  • regular use of hair removing creams, 
  • excessive sweating, 
  • poor ventilation of underarms,
  • accumulation of dead cells,
  • hormonal activity during pregnancy,
  • skin friction with clothes,
  • use of alcohol-based deodorants and antiperspirants, 
  • excessive smoking and 
  • health problems like obesity or diabetes.

The Solution

  • Lemon

Lemon is a kind of natural cleanser and it also acts a powerful anti-bacterial and anti-septic. This is why lemon is used in the treatment of various skin related problem including dark underarms. To remove dead skin cells and to lighten the skin tone of your underarms take a thick slice of lemon and rub it on the affected area. Finally wash the area properly and after some time it is essential to use some moisturizer as lemon can cause skin dryness. Another option is to make a make a paste of lemon juice and small quantity of turmeric and then apply it to your underarms for about ten minutes before washing it off. Instead of turmeric you can also use honey or plain yogurt in small amount.

  • Milk

Milk is a good ingredient for underarm darkening. The vitamins and fatty acids present in milk are good for the skin as they can help in minimizing the dark skin tone. Take two tablespoon of milk and add one tablespoon of curd and one tablespoon of flour to it. Mix it properly to make a thick paste and apply it on dark underarms. Leave it for about fifteen minutes then wash it off with cold water. This remedy will soften the skin and remove the dead skin cells, thus making the skin tone much lighter. Another option is to make a concoction with milk, a pinch of saffron and honey.

  • Papaya fruit

The content of the enzyme contained in papaya, can serve for cleaning the skin. Use the not too ripe papaya and grated until smooth. After finished bathing, use the shredded papaya already in your underarms, wait a while and then rinse thoroughly.

  • Vinegar

Vinegar can also come to your rescue when you wish to get rid of your dark underarms. For this remedy,mix rice flour with strong vinegar to form a thick paste. Apply this paste on the dark underarms after taking a hot shower. Allow the paste to dry for ten to fifteen minutes and then rinse off with warm water. This remedy will not only lighten the skin tone, but will also kill all the germs and bacteria which feed on the dead skin cells causing underarm odor.

  • Baking Soda

If you wish to lighten the skin of your dark underarms, you need to scrub the area on regular basis. To make natural skin scrub at home, take some baking soda and add some water to it to make a thick paste. Now use this paste to scrub your underarms. This will help to remove dead skin cells accumulated in the underarm which is one of the main reasons behind the darkness. It will also help to unclog the skin pores. You can apply a light dusting of baking soda after washing the underarms with warm water to reduce the appearance of dark skin coloration.

  • Potato and cucumber

Potato also works as a natural bleaching agent. You can either rub underarm skin with thinly sliced potatoes, or grate the potato and apply the juice to the affected area. Leave it on for 15 minutes and wash. You will notice that soon the underarm skin appears to be lighter in color. Similarly, you can grate a cucumber and apply the juice under your arms.

  • Waxing Or Electrolysis

The biggest reason for dark underarms is shaving or using hair removal creams. Instead, try waxing. It will hurt more, but at least the hair will be removed from the root and your underarms will appear fairer immediately. Waxing also works as an exfoliating method. For those who want to get rid of underarm hair for good, electrolysis is another permanent option. In time, the darkened patches under the arm will lighten.

  • Less Usage of deodorants

Since we know that your deodorant or antiperspirant could be the reason you have darker underarms, give them a miss. Instead, try natural remedies to combat body odour for a few days. You can mix baking soda with a little water and wipe the underarms with this solution. Anti-fungal powders and alum are also great alternatives. Once your underarms look lighter, shift to specialised whitening deodorants or deodorants made especially for sensitive skin.

  • Whitening Scrubs

Another great option is to use whitening scrubs. Select a scrub for sensitive skin, such as Nivea, St Ives and Everyuth Naturals and use under the arm about once to twice a week.

  • Doctors Treatment

If the above listed ways do not get rid of the dark underarms, you can consult your doctor. Dermatologists will find out what causes your armpits blackened and provide a solution and how to handle it effectively.
