Sixteen years in beauty changes how you look at your own skin, eventually. The biggest shift for me hasn’t been about discipline or routine…it’s been about understanding what’s actually in the products I use.
I used to choose products on instinct. Now I choose them on ingredients. Early on, packaging, scent and reputation told me whether a product was “good.” Now, the first thing I do with any new product is check the actives. Is there niacinamide? What concentration? Is the formula actually suited to what I’m trying to address?
I understand what each ingredient is actually doing. Knowing that niacinamide helps with oil control and tone, that glycolic acid works on texture and dullness, that zinc supports blemish-prone skin…this kind of knowledge changes how you shop.
I read formulas the way I used to read reviews. Reviews still matter, but ingredient lists matter more to me now. A five-star review doesn’t tell me anything about whether a formula will work for my skin specifically. The ingredient deck does.
This has made me a better recommender, not just a better user. Understanding actives hasn’t just changed my own routine…it’s changed how I talk to people about skincare. When someone asks me for a recommendation now, I’m thinking about what’s actually in the product and whether it matches what they’re dealing with.
This shift in my approach to skincare didn’t happen overnight. It came from years of paying attention, asking questions and being willing to be wrong about products I once swore by. If there’s one piece of advice that came out of it: read the ingredients before you read anything else.
Hugs and Kisses,
Msglam
