Glam O’ Sphere BoutiQue has been running for thirteen (13) years now, and in August we celebrated that (I hope you didn’t miss the discount sale 😀 ). Without a lot of fanfare, just with honesty about what it has actually taken to get here, and what keeps it going.
Three things, above everything else.
- Dedication
Running a beauty retail business looks different from the outside than it does from the inside. What people see is the product, the content, the recommendations. What they don’t see is the consistency required to keep all of it moving — the sourcing decisions, the stock management, the customer conversations, the days when nothing goes smoothly and you show up anyway.
Dedication in this business isn’t dramatic. It doesn’t look like a breakthrough moment. It looks like doing the work on an ordinary Tuesday when no one is watching and nothing particularly exciting is happening. That’s what keeps a business alive — not the highlight reel, but the quiet, consistent showing up.
It also means making decisions that aren’t always popular. Choosing quality over convenience. Being selective about what goes on the shelf rather than stocking everything just because it sells. Building something you actually believe in rather than something that simply moves units. That kind of dedication is slower and sometimes harder, but it’s what creates something worth standing behind.
And there’s a particular kind of dedication required when you’re doing this alone. Solo businesses don’t have the luxury of someone else carrying the weight on a hard day. You learn to be your own motivation, your own quality control, your own cheerleader. Some days that’s manageable. Some days it’s genuinely difficult. You show up either way.
- Perseverance
There have been moments in this business that tested whether I actually wanted to keep going. Moments where the easier path would have been to scale back, to pivot away, to let it quietly become something smaller than what I’d imagined.
I didn’t. Not because everything always worked out, but because I understood early enough that the difficult stretches are part of the process, not signs that the process is wrong. Perseverance isn’t stubbornness. It’s the ability to distinguish between a problem worth solving and a signal worth listening to, and to keep moving either way.
Perseverance in business also means tolerating uncertainty for longer than is comfortable. It means investing in something before you can see the return. Also means watching other people move faster and trusting that your pace is still valid. It means not letting a slow month convince you that the whole thing is failing, and not letting a good month convince you that the hard work is over.
What I’ve learned is that the people who last in business aren’t always the most talented or the most resourced. They’re the ones who found a way to keep going when quitting made more logical sense. That’s the thing about perseverance — it’s not a quality you discover at the start. It’s one you build in the middle.
- Love
This one might sound simple but it’s actually the most important. I genuinely love beauty. I love what a good skincare routine does for someone’s confidence. Being the person who knows which product will actually work for a particular skin type is something that brings me joy. I really love the boutique — the curation, the recommendations, the relationship with customers who come back because they trust what we carry.
Without that love, the dedication becomes exhausting and the perseverance becomes pointless. It’s what makes the work feel like more than work, even on the days when it’s hard.
Love is also what keeps the standard high. When you love what you do, you can’t cut corners without feeling it. You care about whether the customer actually gets results, lose sleep over stocking a product you’re not fully convinced by. You feel personally responsible for the experience someone has when they walk away with something from your shelf.
That level of care isn’t something you can manufacture. It either exists or it doesn’t. For me, it has always existed, and I think it shows in what Glam O’ Sphere BoutiQue has become, and in the people who keep coming back.
Running this beauty retail business has taught me that love without dedication is just passion, dedication without love is just discipline, and perseverance without either is just survival. The three together are what build something that lasts.
If you’ve been part of our journey at Glam O’ Sphere BoutiQue in any way, as a customer, a reader, or simply someone who has followed along, thank you.
