7 Tips On How To Take Care Of Relaxed Hair

Last month, I mentioned something about starting a new series here on the blog but didn’t quite get around to it soon enough. So, today, we will be starting a ”hair series” and the first post is on how to take care of relaxed hair. Okay, before we proceed, let me clear the air about this series. I have always relaxed my hair and like it that way. Combing my hair can be a hassle and because relaxers help me to be able to work around and manage my hair better, I’ve chosen to continue doing so. I know a lot of women out there have joined the #naturalhairgang and that’s OK but I do not intend to stop using relaxers, at least not anytime soon šŸ™‚ . So, this hair series is for women like myself that prefer to have their hair relaxed and not a case of saying relaxed hair is better than natural hair. These are just my tips to help maintain healthy relaxed hair. Phew…with that out of the way, let’s get to these 7 tips on how to care of relaxed hair.

How To Take Care Of Relaxed Hair
  • Wash your hair at least once a week – Shampoo your hair at least once a week and condition after every shampoo wash. Use a moisturizing, sulfate free shampoo and a very moisturizing conditioner formulated for chemically treated hair.
  • Deep condition once a week – Relaxers strip the hair of all natural oils. Deep conditioning helps rehydrate chemically treated hair and makes it shiny and strong enough to withstand styling.
  • Apply relaxer to new growth between 6-8 weeks depending on your hair type after last retouch.
  • Cover hair with a silk scarf or cap – Tie your hair in a bun or wrap it in a silk scarf or cap when it’s bedtime. This keeps your hair from getting tangled and prevents dryness. Apply leave on serums to the ends to keep them moisturized while sleeping.
  • Choose to air dry your hair as opposed to blow drying – Air drying is one of the healthiest option to maintain relaxed hair. For straight hair without the help of heat, wrap your hair into a cross wrap and tie with a satin or silk hair scarf to lay tresses down.
  • Avoid using heat as much as possible – Heat can cause relaxed hair to become very dry and prone to breakage.
  • Use a wide tooth-brush/comb for your hair – Use a wide tooth comb or your fingers to gently detangle your hair. Do not use a brush while your hair is wet, because this can cause breakage. Use a boar bristle brush on your hair gently and avoid pulling or tugging on your hair. Also, over-brushing your relaxed hair can cause split ends and hair breakage.

I shall be elaborating more on this tips as we go on this hair journey . Please make sure you’re subscribed, so you won’t miss a thing! I hope you enjoyed this post. How do you take care of your relaxed hair?
