You’ve most likely heard or seen it somewhere or everywhere 😀 , that you should wear sunscreen everyday. Now, you go shopping online or in store and find out there are so many options ; lotions, gels, sprays, mists, chemical, physical, mineral. That can be overwhelming, I know! All you really need to do is pick a brand and choose between the two types – mineral and chemical sunscreens. Yes, that’s right! However, they have their individual benefits and are different as well.
Now, let’s talk about the difference between mineral and chemical sunscreens.
Mineral (Physical) Sunscreen
This is made from ingredients like zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. That’s where the name ‘mineral’ comes from. This type of sunscreen sits on top of your skin and act like a shield to deflect sun rays. It also tends to last a bit longer in direct UV light because the formula is thicker and takes some extra effort to rub in. Physical sunscreens are ideal for both daily and prolonged, intense sun exposure. Kids, babies and people who have sensitive skin love mineral sunscreen because it’s free of fragrance, parabens and dyes.
Chemical Sunscreen
This formula contain one or more of these common active ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and/or octinoxate. They’re deemed safe and approved by the FDA. This type of sunscreen sinks into the skin and act like a sponge to absorb sun rays. It turns the rays into heat and releases it from the skin. Chemical sunscreens are great for everyday wear. The formulas are easy to apply and generally lightweight so they rub in effortlessly leaving no white residue behind.
Honestly, it doesn’t really matter which type you choose. Just make sure it says ‘broad spectrum’ on the label and is at least SPF 30.
Hugs and Kisses,
Missglam.
