How To Spot Fake MAC Eyeshadows!

Hi darlings,

How are  you doing? I hope March started off nicely for you. Okay, today’s post is a ‘spot the difference’ one and I sincerely think it would guide you when you have to buy MAC eyeshadows from any place other than a MAC store / counter. I used to buy my MAC eyeshadows from the UK. I would ask any of my friends coming home to buy and bring for me because I just didn’t want to spend so much money and end up with fake eyeshadows (that feeling blows 😐 ) . Then, MAC Cosmetics came to Nigeria and it’s been a lot easier getting their products. Anyhoo, I saw some MAC eyeshadows online (I’ll withhold the name of the store cos I’m not out to destroy any one’s business). They were on sale and I thought to get some to add to my kit. When they eventually got to me, I was so excited but by the time  I opened the packs, I knew they were knock offs. I quickly went to check out my old eyeshadows to compare and you guessed right, they were fake MAC eyeshadows…ugh! Truth is, I wasn’t as mad as I would have been if I had bought them at the regular MAC cost price. So, I kept the shadows for reference sake.

Luckily, I had MAC eyeshadow in Sushi Flower in my makeup kit before I got a new one and today, I’ll be comparing the Original and the Fake. I prefer the word ‘Knockoff’ that’s why I put that in the pictures but I’ll be switching the words (fake and knock off) in the post. Now let’s get to it:

The Case: The MAC written on the original is lighter and more faint than the knock off. The case of the knock off feels very plastic and not as smooth as the original. It’s very hard to open and the sound it makes when closed is pretty loud compared to the original.

The Label : If you look closely, the name of the eyeshadow and the texture are written on the original while on the fake, only the name is written. Also, the fonts used are different.

The Color : The original MAC eyeshadow is darker in color and there are some specks of glitter in it (which makes it satin). While the fake one has lots more glitter and looks a bit lighter. It can get tricky here.

The Swatch : Now, this is the ultimate test of all. Unfortunately, you can’t swatch products that you purchase online or at other stores except the MAC ones. But , from the picture, the difference is crystal. The original appears deeper in color and pigmentation while the fake feels powdery to touch, it’s lighter and not as pigmented as the former. Tada!

I love MAC cosmetics. Their products are very professional and I always get more than my money’s worth. So, to avoid spending so much money on any of their products only to end up with knock offs, please read this post again and look closely at the pictures too. Alright guys, that’s it on How To Spot Fake MAC Eyeshadows. I hope you found it helpful. Have you ever bought any fake MAC Eyeshadow(s) or other products before? How did you feel?
