The Skincare Myth I’m Done With

There are a lot of common skincare myths floating around, but this one might be the most stubborn…and the most damaging.

If your face feels tight after cleansing, your cleanser is doing too much.

I know, I know. A lot of us were taught that tight, squeaky-clean feeling meant your cleanser was working. That it meant your skin was truly clean. I believed it too for longer than I’d like to admit. But that feeling? Your skin isn’t telling you it’s clean. It’s telling you something else.

When your skin feels tight after washing, your cleanser has likely stripped away too much of what your skin needs. Your natural oils help protect your skin, lock in moisture and keep everything balanced. When you wash those oils away, your skin loses some of that protection.

Instead of feeling refreshed and comfortable, your skin feels tight, dry and uncomfortable. That’s not a sign that your cleanser is doing a great job. It’s often a sign that it’s doing too much.

And your skin’s response to that is to go into overdrive producing more oil to compensate. So if you’ve ever wondered why your skin is simultaneously dry and oily…a too-harsh cleanser might be the reason.

A good cleanser should leave your skin feeling clean, yes…but also soft, comfortable and like itself. Not stretched, raw or like it’s desperately waiting for the next step to rescue it.

This is especially worth paying attention to if you have combination or acne-prone skin, because the instinct is often to cleanse more aggressively to keep breakouts at bay. I understand the logic but it tends to backfire. Stripping your barrier doesn’t prevent breakouts. If anything, the irritation and excess oil production it triggers can make things worse.

Among the common skincare myths we need to leave behind, this one sits right at the top for me. The fix is simpler than it sounds…find a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser that respects your skin rather than fighting it. Your routine will work better, your skin will feel better and you’ll wonder why you put up with the tight feeling for so long.

We live and we learn.
